What is the difference between wet and dry felting?

Wet felting is a process that is made by continuous rubbing of the fibers with organic olive oil soap and water, which helps to form the wool fibers into a firm, felted material. Needle felting is a different felting process that is also known as dry felting. Needle felting uses barbed needles that stab into the wool, which helps to pull the wool into itself and locks the wool fibers together. Wet Felting

Wet felting a traditional felting method that is created by the continuous rubbing of the fibers with organic olive oil soap and water, which helps to form the wool fibers into a firm, felted material.

Wet felting is generally used for felting overly large products, as well as items that are use felt to cover over solid products, such as shoes, slippers, hats, bowls, etc. Our Sakré boots and Sakré slippers are made by using the wet felting method.

Fulling or Knit Felting

This process is used to shrink knitted items.
Shrinking helps to fill (hence the term “fulling”) the holes between the stitches and locks the fibers together.
This fulling method can be also be done on crocheted or woven items as well.
The shrinking process can be done by hand or in a washing machine.

Needle Felting

Unlike wet felting, needle felting also uses organic olive oil soap and water, but barbed needles are used to help tangle the fibers.
This barbed needle is repeatedly poked into a clump of wool until you have achieved your desired texture, firmness and shape.

Needle felting is generally used to help create 3D shapes and figures or for applying decorative elements to fabrics or garments.

Nuno Felting

This wet felting technique was originally developed in NSW, Australia by Polly Stirling. Nuno felting helps to create a sheer fabric that is made by embedding or entangling the wool or fiber into a an open weave fabric, such as silk chiffon or gauze until you achieve your desired design, color or textured effect.
